Wind is a blowing

We are staying another day in Port McNeill, as the gale winds haven't downgraded enough for us to make the next passage. I'm currently in a local laundry mat doing laundry and they provide free wifi/internet access. We had thought we'd take the BC ferry over to Alert Bay, but we missed the 8:45am ferry and are not sure if we want to take a ferry later in the day yet.

note: mid afternoon update winds are ~25 nm/hr in the marina and much stronger out in the Queen Charlotte Strait. Northwest tip of Vancouver Island there is a report of 50nm/hr. Needless today we're happy to be in a slip today and feeling very safe. There is a sailboat on anchor in the harbor and we've seen it reset their anchor several times today. Weather forecast shows it winds will begin to decline this evening, so we are currently thinking we may have a chance of leaving here early tomorrow morning.

It rained last night, but in Port McNeill the winds were very calm. About dinner time, before the rain began, a bald eagle cruised low to the water in the marina. He/she came very close to our boat. It was a special treat for us, as it was the closest we have probably ever been to one.

This morning we had a nice hot breakfast of pancakes, sausage and coffee. Very tasty and filling.

I'm going to try to upload some photos to past postings of this blog this morning. I have plenty, so not sure how many I'll be able to upload.

This afternoon we plan to check out one of the highlights in Port McNeill. They have a 24 ton burl on a local tree. It is evidently the world's largest, so we have it on our list of "must see" in Port McNeill. They also have a museum, a couple of gardens you could easily spend a day touring, beaches & hiking places to explore, whale & bear tours and many additional fun things to do. The BC Ferry system and local bus transportation system is quite good and can also take you to many other nearby ports of interest, should you not have a boat. Actually, a bit north of hear is Port Hardy where you can also catch the Ferry to Alaska.
